Respitality Breaks

Hostelling Scotland is proud to have developed a partnership with Respitality, which donates breaks to unpaid carers across Scotland. Respitality is a national initiative co-ordinated by Shared Care Scotland, and funded by the Scottish Government. Respitality connects local carers' organisations with the hospitality sector, so that unpaid carers can be provided with much deserved breaks, enabling them to continue their caring role. The name comes from a combination of 'Respite' and 'Hospitality' = Respitality. Through Respitality, Hostelling Scotland is able to support unpaid carers from local communities where our youth hostels are based and beyond.

Hostelling Scotland donated 2 pilot overnight Respitality breaks at the newly refurbished Aberdeen Youth Hostel in 2017, to celebrate the completion of the refurbishment. The breaks were taken up by carers supported by Angus Carers Centre and were a great success with fantastic feedback from the carers who stayed with us. One of the carers said: “Thank you for our night we spent in November, just what I needed. Our room was fantastic and really felt relaxed and at home…”

Another carer gave her feedback in this video created by Angus Carers. If you fast forward to 6.32 in this video you’ll see the interview with Krissy and her feedback about her stay with us.

For 2018, in support of the Year of Young People, Hostelling Scotland are offering 12 overnight Respitality breaks specifically for Young Adult Carers aged 16 to 25. These will support young people to have a vital break from their caring roles, with overnight breaks donated at Glasgow, Edinburgh, Oban, Pitlochry, Aviemore, Aberdeen, Stirling, and Glen Nevis Youth Hostels.

In addition Hostelling Scotland have offered a full catered group break for up to 28 Young Carers aged 8 to 25 years in our 5 star Oban Youth Hostel. The Young Carers will be able to have a trip away as a group and stay for 2 nights in Oban Lodge at Oban Youth Hostel. This will give them the opportunity to relax, have fun, and have a break from their caring routine.
