Oban Youth Hostel
About About this youth hostel
Surrounded by miles of beautiful countryside and dramatic coastline, this five star VisitScotland accredited youth hostel is within easy walking distance of the town centre and comprises two buildings - the original Victorian villa and a modern lodge to the rear.
A perfect choice for groups, families and individual travellers, both buildings offer high quality accommodation in private en-suite rooms and comfortable shared dorms, all with lockers and bedside lighting and many with sea views. WiFi is free and other facilities include a well-equipped self-catering kitchen, an excellent drying room, laundry and secure cycle storage with bike washing facilities. Basic provisions, confectionery and soft drinks are available to purchase at reception.
Guests can opt for continental breakfast in the beautiful Raasay Dining Room and relax with a glass of wine or local craft beer in the adjoining lounge with views over the Firth of Lorne and the Inner Hebrides. Dinner and packed lunches are also available by prior arrangement for groups of ten or more. Please remember to pre-book your food.
The lodge is perfect for groups wanting their own space and can be hired separately from the main building.
The hostel is right on the seafront, close to the ferry port, and we’re happy to accommodate guests catching early ferries to the islands.
Nearby attractions include Oban Distillery, McCaig’s Tower, St Columba’s Cathedral and Oban War & Peace Museum. Famous for its local seafood, Oban boasts many good restaurants, bars and shops. For the more adventurous, scuba diving and sailing are available locally.

Overall one of the nicest visits I have made this year. The Receptionist/Manager, Fiona, did everything in her power to make my visit one of the best, nothing was too much trouble. I can only thank her for the hospitality and highly recommend her to Hostelling Scotland.DaveK

Lovely hostel situated in a perfect position with a delightful view across the bay to Kerrera. Highly recommend taking the small ferry across to this island with a short walk to the Tea Garden - delightful!Lyn Wallace

Brilliant views, enough pillows (I used to have a theory that SYHA had invented the negative pillow, makes the mattress lower wherever it's placed, but 2 excellent pillows). And I've been reading about Atlantic rainforest, and found that Dunollie woods are in this category - must explore further next time! Instead of just sitting at McCaig's Tower watching ferries.urbanotterspotter

Fabulous bedding. Clean, soft, and just warm enough for a Scottish summer night. You could tell that the towels, beds, and tables were cleaned often. Didn't feel nervous about Covid. The lounge and main dining room overlooking the Gaelic Sea were beautiful, and the receptionists marked important features in the Oban area. Live music, pubs, restaurants, shops, and terminals. Great shower pressure. Easy to find location along the seawall. Simple and clear instructions for all facilities.tegang

Great stay in a great Youth Hostel. Check-in went well for our large party and rooms allocated smoothly. Rooms are large, modern and comfortable. Well equipped Youth Hostel. Breakfast was great, large selection and all very good. Great value for money and would definitely recommend it.Graeme

Nadja was most helpful as on arrival we discovered that we were in a shared room & had been expecting a twin room. This needs to be made clearer at booking. No other rooms were available due to a large party in the annex. The hostel is stylish, bright, clean, warm & comfortable. Off street parking. Tasty breakfast. Well done in having individual bedside lights!Very cool nvenient situation for walking into town. You can watch the Calmac ferries from the sitting rooms!Fiona Murphy

I was barely in the hostel arriving late and leaving early, but everything l experienced was excellent. Extremely welcoming helpful staff member at check in. Bunks were comfortable, beds solid, no squeaking when turning over! Shower was powerful, towels were soft and the room was extremely clean. The hostel felt generally well cared for and looked after. I'd definitely stay again when l have an early ferry!Robyn

We stayed for two nights prior and after visiting an island. It is a 20 min walk to the ferry from the hostel. The check in staff were friendly and helpful. The beds were very comfortable. We had a breakfast which was lovely, with lots to choose from. We were able to leave our backpacks in the hostel whilst we went walking which was very convenient. We got caught in a rain shower just before our departure and the receptionist let us dry off and make a cup of tea before we left for the station.Melanie

Years ago I was in Oban in the same YH. This time it was even better, the service in the YH was okay and Fiona was very friendly to us.This YH is a good start for a hike on the Isles like Kerrera and Mull, but also after hiking it is a nice place to relax and enjoy Oban.Mac Ab

Reasons to visit
Oban is often referred to as the 'Gateway to the Isles'.
With regular ferries to the Inner Hebridean islands of Mull, Coll, Tiree or Iona, it's a great base if you intend to go island hopping!
But before you head off there's lots to discover in and around the town itself.
Find your sea legs with a short jaunt over to a neighbouring island - Kerrera - rugged and unspoiled and home to beautiful Gylen Castle. Visit McCraig's tower, a ten minute drive from the hostel with panoramic views across the Sound of Mull. Explore Easdale Island Folk Museum and get a fascinating insight into the history of slate mining in the local area.
For the more adventurous there are a number of activities available in the local area including sea kayaking and scuba diving.
Oban is known as Scotland's seafood capital and there are plenty of opportunities for you to enjoy fine local seafood with a number of award winning restaurants based in the town.
