Opening doors for young people to discover the real Scotland

Hostelling Scotland is proud to be working in partnership with The Scottish Civic Trust on the successful delivery of the Braw Buildings Project, as part of the Year of Young People 2018 celebrations.

The Doors Open Day Youth Advisory Panel helped to co-design the project, which gives young people the opportunity to see more of Scotland this September, and explore new areas of the country. As part of the application process 16-25 year olds were able to choose where in Scotland they wanted to travel, which Hostelling Scotland youth hostel they wanted to stay in, and which Doors Open Day venues they wanted to visit.

Hostelling Scotland Chief Executive, Margo Paterson said:

“The Braw Buildings Project will support over 60 young people aged 16 to 25 from across Scotland by offering a fantastic opportunity to explore and experience our beautiful country, stay in a youth hostel and discover the buildings on their doorstep during Doors Open Days - all for free.”

The Scottish Civic Trust’s Director, Dr Susan O’Connor said:

“The Braw Buildings project offers young people the chance to explore their heritage in places they wouldn’t usually get to. We can’t wait to see what they get up to!”

Braw Buildings will support disadvantaged young people who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to explore Scotland, as well as talented young artists, bloggers, photographers and videographers, who will capture and share their experiences.

Hostelling Scotland will provide free accommodation in youth hostels in Aberdeen, Inverness, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling and Pitlochry for each young person and a friend, as well as providing support with planning of trips. Scottish Civic Trust, which protects and enhances the country’s historic environments, will help young people to plan their trips to each Doors Open Day venue. In addition, Scotrail has kindly backed the project by providing free rail tickets to a number of participants.
