Hostelling Scotland ran a project in partnership with New College Lanarkshire from Monday 16th to Friday 20th April, to offer 6 students on the HNC and HND Travel and Tourism course a fantastic opportunity to “Take Over” Glasgow Youth Hostel, as part of our programme of activity for the Year of Young People 2018.
The students received training in the key systems and policies of the Hostel prior to the takeover and were supported to take on key roles within the hostel during the week with support from the Glasgow Youth Hostel team. The students gained valuable work experience in areas including housekeeping, catering, customer care, reservations, ordering stock, organising bed plans, and much more! They were able to gain valuable skills and experience of the Hospitality and Tourism Sector to support them in their future careers. The students also stayed in the hostel during the week giving them the opportunity to experience hostelling, explore Glasgow, and develop their independent living skills.
The project offered an opportunity for young people to take part in positive experiences and supported the YOYP 2018 Enterprise Theme which is focussed on Celebrating young people’s role n innovation, entrepreneurship and the Scottish economy, and was a great collaboration between the Tourism industry and key partners in the Education sector.
Mairi Nicolson, Curriculum Leader from the college said “Our students thoroughly enjoyed their time and although they had to work hard, they were all so positive about their experience.”
Yaw Niemo one of the students who complete the weeks said “Thank you for a great week of experience and being so welcoming”
All the students felt they gained new skills, and said they would recommend the experience to others.
